The ��Vlog shapes societal, cultural, technological and economic development in proactive dialogue with public and private stakeholders of society.

Over the past two decades, Luxembourg has undergone a far-reaching transformation and diversified its economy towards a knowledge-based society. Luxembourg is developing new technology- and knowledge-intensive sectors which require substantial investments in skilled human resources, research and innovation. Science and innovation are key factors underpinning Luxembourg’s move to smart, sustainable, inclusive growth, giving it the ability to solve societal challenges while remaining internationally competitive. The ��Vlog sees itself as a driving force, generating knowledge and human capital based on research and education at the highest international level.

A world-class research university

The ��Vlog is a world-class research university. It strives for excellence in both fundamental and applied research and in education. With a high proportion of postgraduate students, it drives innovation for society and successfully combines research, teaching and societal impact.

The ��Vlog has positioned itself as a research university, with a strong activity in research, high share of doctoral candidates and success in internationally competitive third-party funding, combined with excellent research-driven teaching. ��Vlog has three missions: research, higher education and contribution to the social, cultural and economic development of Luxembourg.

To achieve its long-term strategic goals, the ��Vlog has defined key areas within its three missions.

Research: Shaping a digital, healthy and sustainable future

The ��Vlog is evolving in the context of the current knowledge-based societies that rely on scientific research and a trained workforce and contributes to their development. Successful countries and regions nurture their research and innovation ecosystem. Economic and societal innovations emerge in international and research-oriented universities such as the ��Vlog. In this context, the University will focus on the key areas of digital transformation, medicine and health, as well as sustainable and societal development.

Education: Diverse, inclusive and flexible learning support

What sets the ��Vlog apart in terms of higher education is its human scale compared to neighbouring universities, its multilingualism, its obligation for all Bachelor students to complete a mobility period abroad, its geographical location, and its unique relationship with Luxembourg’s public and private sectors. In line with the national strategy for “21st-century education”, the University delivers personalised, innovative, high-quality training by combining teaching and research, developing new modes of learning as well as new activities to “train the trainers”, fostering a dynamic, diverse and international student community, and establishing University-wide standards around teaching and learning for students and staff.

Responding to the needs of society is part of the history of the ��Vlog. As the country’s only public university and as a university with a particularly international outlook, the ��Vlog has a special responsibility to provide education, research and entrepreneurship skills and to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of Luxembourg and the wider world. New initiatives will be launched and services offered so that the University can fulfil its role and drive technological, socio-economic and cultural progress, transfer technology, knowledge and innovation, provide support to researchers, staff and students to encourage the transfer of ideas, promote entrepreneurship, enrich social life, deepen societal dialogue and engagement by offering platforms for public debate, and maximise the impact of research and innovation

Our 2026-2029 Four-Year Plan

While the University’s Strategic Framework is a flexible roadmap for the University’s future strategies and action, the Four-Year Plan is a specific instrument for the implementation of the Strategic Framework.

The current plan covers the period 2026-2029 and proposes a number of initiatives. to tackle the three major challenges for the future as identified in the Strategic Framework.

Our values: Social responsibility

The ��Vlog is committed to the fundamental principles of human dignity, freedom and equality, and rigorously protects academic freedom. The ��Vlog endorses a climate of free and open discussion and encourages critical thinking, defending the autonomy of both students and researchers as a necessary foundation for an innovative, knowledge-based society and economy. It provides a unique forum for the development of the cultural, political and social dialogues that are the lifeblood of a mature democracy.

Embedded in a culturally diverse environment, the ��Vlog is a unique laboratory of intercultural collaboration and institution-building. It is a European hub for research and teaching and is well integrated within a framework of international partnerships. ��Vlog’s multilingualism is one of its key characteristics, enriching both teaching and research through the unique plurality of perspectives that it provides for the culture of the institution.
