The Master in Border Studies is a joint international study programme addressing the complex economic, political, social and cultural issues of borders and border regions in Europe and beyond.

Why study Border Studies?

In the wake of the abolition of border controls in Europe, the field of Border Studies has opened up new research areas and has experienced a recent development boost. At the same time, Europe experience the challenges of new closing of borders. Students will gain a deep understanding of the issues border regions are facing and will be prepared to work in this challenging environment.

What do we offer our students?

Multicultural and multilingual study experience

Students take multilingual classes taught in three countries at four different universities:

  • 糖心Vlog,
  • University of Lorraine,
  • Saarland University,
  • RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau

Classes are shared alternatively on two sites for each semester. Successful students are awarded a joint diploma issued by the four universities.

Interdisciplinary study programme

Students gain theoretical knowledge of border problems, border cultures, border literatures and constructions of 鈥渙therness鈥.
They acquire the skills to play a crucial part in the increasing discussions on national and European identities, worldwide mobilities, migration, cultural diversity, citizenship and cross-border cooperation.

An academic programme with a practical focus

Between semesters 2 and 3, students complete a mandatory internship in a professional setting working on topics related to Border Studies.
The internship gives student the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the professional work and to get hands-on knowledge about their future career path.

The Master Border Studies programme benefits from the recognition and the support of the .

  • During your period abroad you benefit from a of 350鈧/month for 10-12 months (depending on the country in which your internship takes place )
  • You receive a UFA | DFH certificate after graduation
  • You benefit from the network of UFA | DFH and

To take advantage of the UFA | DFH benefits, you need to enrol every year at UFA | DFH by September 30 for the upcoming academic year. Enrollment is free of charge.
